Chapter Twelve
The look of complete and utter disbelief on Evie’s face made Logan feel like the worst sort of deviant. Of course, it was better then the look of horror on her face after she’d seen his scars. Damn. What had he been thinking? He never let anyone see his scars. Not just because he didn’t want their pity, but also because he saw them as a sign of stupidity. He could’ve hidden from his father’s wrath like his mother and brother. Instead, he’d wanted any attention he could get from his father. Even the painful kind.
But now Evie knew. And maybe that’s partly why he’d shown her the pictures. He’d wanted to distract her from feeling sorry for him. Now he realized they only made him look more pathetic.
Her eyes got wider and wider as she swiped through the pictures on his phone. She finally stopped and stared at him. “How long?” she asked with a quiver in her voice. He was pretty sure the quiver was from suppressed anger. “How long have you been taking pictures of us?”
“Clint,” he clarified. “I was talking pictures of Clint. You just happened to be in a few of them.” Or more than a few.
“Fine. How long have you been talking pictures of Clint?”
“Since he was three.”
She glanced down at the phone in her hand, then back up at him. “Three?” She turned and walked to the balcony doors, then stood there with her back to him as if she couldn’t stand to look at him. He knew how she felt. Some days he couldn’t stand to look at himself in the mirror. Yesterday had been one of those days. He had stayed up most the night recalling Clint’s tears and hating himself for causing them. And as hard as it was to confess his stalking to Evie, he wanted his son to know that he did care. He could never be the father Clint deserved, but he did care.
“I don’t want to make anything more complicated for you, Evie. I just want to have an opportunity to talk with Clint. I want to try to explain things to him about my father and my fears and why I thought it was best to stay away. Why I still think it’s best to stay away from him.” When she didn’t say anything, he blew out his breath and sat down on the bed. “Fine. If you want me to leave, I’ll go. But I want you to tell Clint that I never meant to hurt him. That I stayed away to keep from hurting him. To keep him safe. And if you change your mind about me talking to him, or if he wants to talk to me, I’ll leave you my address in Abilene.”
“So you live in Abilene,” she said without turning around.
“Yes.”
She hugged her arms around herself and her shoulders tightened. He knew she was mad, but she also looked vulnerable. Maybe it was the clothes and the ponytail. When he’d first seen her today, it was like being pulled back in time fifteen years.
